WANNABE AN OUTRIDER
So you wannabe an outrider eh? Put away the quarter and get set for the ride of your life because this race cannot be stopped with the pull of a cord.
They have been called the "Unsung Heroes", the "Wild Bunch", the "Kamikaze Cowboys" and at times just "Darn Crazy". Whatever way you look at it, it's a true test of strength, guts and agility and there's no room for error. Hold a high strung lead team and when the horn sounds haze them to the top barrel while holding onto your horse making sure you are clear of all competitors. Then as your equine partner attempts to drag you away you must mount up using just the saddle horn and your agility. That's right no stirrups. Mount up make the figure 8 pattern and ride cowboy ride and don't be late..jpg)
Many have attempted and many have failed but for some who have what it takes they experience the adrenaline and success.
Some outriders team up with drivers to hone their outriding skills while others participate in scheduled schools. Whatever the case a rookie outrider must and a new outrider may have to take an outriding test in front of the “Driving/Outriding Testing Committee” before they will be issued a permit or full outrider membership. During an outriding test the outrider will be required to either hold leaders or throw stove for the outfit that has pulled into the barrels, the horn will blow, the outrider must mount his horse, do the figure 8 pattern correctly, race around the track, finish within 150’ of the outfit but not ahead of the outfit, pull up the horse, get him under control, turn around at the 1st corner and come back in front of the grandstand area all the while having control of the horse.
